Since the dawn of human spaceflight, crewed capsules have carried astronauts beyond Earth. It began in 1961 with Vostok 1, when Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space. The Soviet Union's Vostok, followed by Voskhod and Soyuz, pioneered early missions.
The United States answered with Mercury, then Gemini, and finally Apollo which carried astronauts to the Moon. The Apollo Command Module was the first and only capsule to take humans beyond low Earth orbit.
In recent times, SpaceX’s Crew Dragon became the first commercial capsule to carry astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) in 2020. NASA’s Orion capsule is now in development for deep space missions under the Artemis program.
