The SpaceX Merlin 1D is a liquid-fueled rocket engine designed and built in-house by SpaceX, running on RP-1 (refined kerosene) and liquid oxygen (LOX) in a gas-generator cycle. First introduced in 2012, it powers the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets, with nine engines clustered on each Falcon 9 first stage. Each Merlin 1D produces about 190,000 pounds of thrust at sea level (845 kN) with a high thrust-to-weight ratio, making it one of the most efficient booster engines ever built. It is designed for reusability, capable of multiple restarts, and plays a key role in enabling Falcon 9’s rapid turnaround and booster landings.
